On Sept. 7, the football team opened its season against the Windham Whippets, and won 27-20.

In the first seven minutes of the game Windham scored, but the Waterford sideline got louder, and the team focused on what they set out to do – come up with a win.

The squad came back, scored and was up at the half, 13-12. The score went back and forth during the third quarter. In the fourth quarter with only a few minutes left, senior Devin Craig caught the winning pass, giving the team its first win of the season.

Craig said, “I feel like I did big plays. The last two to end the game. I had the 40yd catch and then the touchdown to win.”

After the game, junior Luther Wade said, “We’ve been working hard since summer and it’s just great for us to be able to pull this [win] out.”

Assistant defensive coach Ryan Grillo, said, “We had some difficulty in the first half, but we picked it up.”

Grillo named senior Kyle Cardoza, a wide receiver and safety on the team, MVP of the game. When Cardoza learned of the honor, he smiled and said, “That feels good. On to the next one.”

Last week, the team had an off-week. Its next game is this Friday at Alumni Field at  6:30pm against the Montville Indians.
