Award Night With Big Surprises

February 27th marked the 83rd annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Although the night was full of big wins, and even bigger gowns, the entertainment aspect fell short.

The ceremony began with a parody that involved Anne Hathaway and James Franco “incepting” the dreams of Alec Baldwin. Although it did manage to incorporate all the major films of the year, the jokes, puns, and witty comments feel short. The awkwardness continued as Anne and James’ introduction involved awkward dress fondling and Franco’s grandmother reporting the sighting of “Marky, Mark”.

However, the first award of the night went to Melissa Leo, for “Best Supporting Actress” for her role in The Fighter. A shaky Leo, accepted the award with both shock and a surprise Bomb raid. Luckily American televisers were able to bleep out the profanity before being sent out to millions of people; however, they failed to catch the blunder internationally.

Other big wins went to Tom Hooper for direction of The King’s Speech, Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor in The Fighter, Natalie Portman for Best Actress in Black Swan, and Colin Firth for Best Actor in The King’s Speech.

However, the biggest win of the night for Best Picture was awarded to The King’s Speech.
