The Waterford Green Party is a local political party that is made up of environmentalists and grassroots activists, which was formed in 2013 by two Waterford High School alumni Baird Welch-Collins and Joshua Kelly. It has grown a lot since its beginning, with multiple members serving on various boards.

Kelly said, “We have nearly doubled the number of candidates running on the Green line since 2015.”

The Green Party is different from the two major political parties. They are a third party and offer many opinions that the others do not. The others must not alienate their base, so they cannot adopt these viewpoints, but the Green Party does.

Welch-Collins said,  “All of our candidates are motivated by a genuine sense of duty to community and democracy, which is sometimes difficult to find elsewhere.”

They not only want to benefit their political party by winning but also want to improve the town. They have many points they want to hit.

Kelly said, “Some of those points include advocating for the movement away from standardized testing, adopting a rank-choice voting system for town elections, preserving more of Waterford’s natural areas for future generations, and pushing for a wider use of solar technology in homes and businesses.”

If elected, then they can work to make Waterford standout as a model for other towns.

Welch-Collins said “Municipal elections can decide the future of our town for better or for worse.  It is important that all voters, especially young voters, make their voices heard on November 7.”
