Students’ Perspective on Cell Phones

At Waterford High School, one of the topics that teachers and administrators have discussed  over the summer is student phone usage during class. Many of the departments have decided to implement a no phone policy. While phones may be seen as problems for teachers, some students believe that phones can be valued as academic devices.


According to a national survey by the Independent Research Firm Survata of 500 college students, 75 percent of students feel that phones or devices help them to learn more effectively, and 94 percent of students want to use phones for academic purposes. Additionally, many students say they learn better with online texts, which also cost less.


Students in Waterford High School have strong opinions. When provided the question: “Do you think the new phone use policies are fair?” 75 percent of respondents said yes. Many students believe that they use their phones responsibly (92%), and the same number of people think that phones can be used for academic purposes. Thus, students believe that phones can be a help with improving classrooms as well as aiding in learning.


According to a survey completed by Waterford High School students, around 18 individuals say that phones help academically and can be used for “practice quizzes, homework resources, and Google Classroom.” However, other students believe that phones are used poorly and should not be used at all for school.


Students have spoken at both the high school and college level. They believe that phones can be of used in schools. While teachers may think that students are always on their phones, and being irresponsible with them, students have a different opinion. This is an important issue, and both sides of the argument need to be heard.
