Spring Sports Preview: Boys’ Tennis, Golf and Boys’ Lacrosse

As spring rolls around the golf players break out their golf clubs. With their strong senior leadership this season, the players are sure to swing their team in the right direction.

“One of our strengths has to be our five seniors that all have experience,” said Coach Little.

The team plans on trying very hard this season to accomplish all of their goals and overcoming their weaknesses. Their goals this season are to be more competitive for a medium division title in the ECC and qualify for the state division two tournament.

“Our strongest weakness would have to be consistency,” said Coach Little.

The golf players are very confident that with hard work and determination, they can turn their goals into success.

“This season we have good chemistry from last year and past playing experience with each other. Most players on the team have experience playing which is good for competitions,” said freshman Matt Shea.

No matter how the team does, they will be proud of themselves wherever they end.

“We hope to do very well in our division and represent Waterford High School with our continued best efforts,” said Coach Little.

“It’s going to be a great season for everyone,” said freshman Matt Shea.

The boys’ tennis team is off to great start and is looking forward to a successful season. The top returnees are:

  • Dana Aing, senior, a singles player
  • Shushwat Kala, sophomore, a singles player
  • Matt Getty, junior, a singles player
  • Alan Luner, sophomore, a singles player
  • Brett Pias, junior, a doubles player
  • Tucker Murphy, junior, a doubles player
  •  best newcomer is freshman Sam Herbert, freshmen.

Coach Ralph DiSaia, who has coached at the school for 10 years, said “We finished third in the State last year, and graduating six starters. We have a strong group of underclassmen that will be competitive in the M Division.”

DiSaia views this season as a rebuilding year.

Sophomore Benny Dong said “We are looking forward to winning states.”

The Sticks are Out

If you’re heading out to watch one of the boys’ lacrosse games, be sure to look out for seniors Casey Sullivan, Kobey Coburn, and Jake Wiseman, and junio Ryan Brouwer .

The goal for this season is to win the ECC Small Division, qualify for the CIAC State Tournament and advance past the first round of the state tournament.

“I think we will do very well. I like our team. I like our work ethic and I like how we compete” said Coach Landry.

The offensive chemistry is one of the strengths this season with the team since there are several returning players who cooperate with one another and play off each others’ strengths.

A weakness is the inexperience due to several new players this season and how well the boys do this season depends on how fast the new players pick up the game.

Although new to the team, seniors Ron Baude, Ivar Wirta, and Johnny Palladino, and freshmen Spencer Sqandurra show potential.

The new turf field also proves to be an advantage to the team.

“It’s the best field in the area, we are capable of playing in any type of weather (except lightning), without any concern of poor footing. It is great to walk out to the field and not have to worry about puddles, lines or holes in the ground. We are very fortunate.” said Landry.

The early starting lineup goes as follows: On attack, there are Sullivan and senior Chris Wallace and junior Andrew Nassetta; midfielders are senior Jon Thomas, Brouwer and sophomore Shawn O’Loughlin; defensive midfielders are juniors Zac Fardon and Joe Pezzolesi and Sgandurra; on the defensive side are Koburn, Baude and junior Cody Susi, with Wiseman in goal.
