If you’re looking for an undemanding but also extremely captivating read, then Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kristen Miller may be an amazing choice. The book, released in 2014, is not just thrilling, but also very fascinating. The story is about an 11-year-old, Charlie Laird, who is unable to capture a good night’s sleep. When the evil witch that haunts him during his nightmares appears in the real world, it causes mayhem for Charlie. With his friends, they go on an unforgettable journey to face their fears and their enemies as well. The authors do an incredible job to create a world-building experience. Not only is there tons of action, there’s also a deep amount of thought that goes into the background of the characters. From Charlie’s stepmother to his friends, they all have undergone different experiences to differentiate themselves from each other. One of the biggest strong suits in the book are the supernatural characters, who come in a plethora of different personalities. The wild adventures that Charlie goes on with these characters are often unpredictable and surprising. While the story has a dark and grim environment, the story itself is also humorous. It is clear that the authors chose to incorporate a balance between the comedic and serious aspects of the book. The settings and characters are often out-of-this-world, which may draw some readers in and out of the book. The book is actually one of three, with two being published in the same year as the first one. Depending on the severity of how one enjoys an unconstrained story, Nightmares! is not afraid to break the boundaries of its readers’ expectations.
