NOTE: This article is part of an on-going series to help keep our community up-to-date on the goings on regarding the political process in our county and community.

On Monday, April 11th, over 400 protesters were arrested in the U.S. capitol. While it was seen as a calm and peaceful protest, police officers described it as an “unlawful demonstration activity” such as crowding and obstruction.

These protesters come from a group called Democracy Spring, an organization that is looking to end the corruption of big money in politics and give the government back to the people. From April 2nd to the 11th, protesters have marched 140 miles from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. and they vow to sit in on the capitol until the government takes immediate action trying to fix the problem. 3,500 people have already pledged to risk arrest and take a chance trying to make America better, ensuring free and fair elections so that everyone has an equal voice.

As this organization grows, it is becoming the largest American disobedience action group in over a generation. Peter Callahan, the group’s communications coordinator, told online website Reuters that “We believe this is the people’s house, and Congress should be responsive to the people. We need to protect voting rights.”

The arrests that took place at the protest are not stopping the protesters of Democracy Spring. According to its website, they are continuing their nonviolent protests and are even taking sign ups online. The people aren’t scared to stand up for what they think is right, even if it means they will get arrested. They hope that their voices will be heard, so America listens to the people more and will make the government more equal for all classes.
