Most Waterford High School students know about the fish in room 324. The fish are used for the marine biology class, helping students learn about marine wildlife. However, the third-floor fish aren’t the only class pets in the school anymore.
Students who take French get to spend class with Newshelle Obama and Lancé, and these two land hermit crabs can be found in room 206. After the death of her dog, Madame Shea wanted another pet. She asked her husband for a dog but was turned down. This summer, while at the beach on vacation, she purchased two hermit crabs, thinking her two-year-old daughters would love them, but she was very wrong.
The hermit crabs were moved to the school after her daughters would ask to hold them before throwing them across the room. Even after apologizing and promising to be nice, the hermit crab discus would continue.
Madame Shea thought that high schoolers would be kinder and a better fit for the Anomura friends. One of Madame’s students, Marli Decosta, took the hermit crabs home for a weekend; coincidentally, her cousin is a certified hermit crab rehabilitator. She told Madame that they needed serious changes for a better life. They were upgraded with a bigger tank, saltwater pool, and three new types of food.
Madame Shea says she is proud to be contributing to the class pets, being one of the only two classrooms to have them. She is hoping all goes well with these pets, saying, “I just hope we don’t get in trouble because if I have to take them back home, it will surely be the end.”
