Located in New London, CT, Michael’s Dairy is what people like to call a “rite of passage” for anyone who lives in the area. It was built and opened in 1938 and continues to be popular today. It is a good place to get ice cream after a sports game, long day at the beach, or even just when you want a sweet treat.
Michael’s Dairy offers an old-school vibe. There is no indoor seating, just a big menu with seating located outside. During the summer, the lines can get long, especially after a nice warm day. It is usually filled with people from different age groups; this brings a sense of community.
The ice cream itself is delicious and lives up to the hype. There are 35 different flavors to choose from, so you are always able to change it up and get a new flavor or new toppings. You can stick with something simple, like vanilla or chocolate, or you can explore with new flavors. Michael’s Dairy favorite Campfire S’mores, or you can get something different from just ice cream. They also serve brownie sundae and milkshakes.
Michael’s Dairy also offers a wide variety of toppings like Oreos, gummy bears, hot fudge, caramel, and many more. The texture of the ice cream is very creamy and rich. The portions are also bigger than you would expect and you really do get your money’s worth. A small ice cream in a cup is around $3.37 but will cost extra if you want toppings.
A popular staple is their sundaes, especially their brownie sundaes, which comes with ice cream of your choice, lots of brownie bits, a boat load of hot fudge, and a pile of whipped cream on top. The milkshakes are also delicious and are the perfect mix of milk and ice cream and just the right texture. You are also able to choose any ice cream and mix in any toppings. The workers are very efficient and fast, so even if the line is long, it moves by quickly.
Another great part of the place is that it is owned by Mitchell College, which acquired Michael’s Dairy in May 2006. Kids who go to Mitchell are able to work there, while also taking classes very close by.
