Munson’s Chocolate, nestled in the heart of Olde Mistick Village, was originally founded in Manchester, Connecticut as the “Dandy Candy Company” in 1946. Since then, the store has adopted its new name and expanded to eight locations across Connecticut. It is still owned by the Munson family and all of their candy is made in their own factory located in Bolton, Connecticut.
Walking into their Mystic location, we were pleased to be met with towers of chocolates, a clean and inviting interior, and friendly faces from the two employees. The person waiting on us was sociable and initiated an amiable conversation while they prepared our order in a timely manner.
Munson’s Chocolate is best known for their high-quality chocolate they use to cover various treats, including Oreo’s, gummy bears, potato chips, and more. We ordered frozen bananas, salted caramel fudge, and peanut butter cups.
Ordering a frozen banana was a unique experience. The employee took two bananas from the freezer and heated up a pot of chocolate. The bananas were then dipped into the molten chocolate, which hardened into a delicious shell around the banana. Customers can choose to dip their banana in either dark or milk chocolate, and top it with nuts, chocolate sprinkles, and more. We ordered two bananas dipped in milk chocolate without any toppings, and they were outstanding. The rich chocolate complemented the sweet banana perfectly. Overall, the banana is definitely worth it to purchase on your next trip to Mystic.
The salted caramel fudge was delicious, with sweet chocolate and gooey caramel. They blended together, melting in the mouth with a rich flavor. While the fudge was delectable, we would have liked it to have a pinch more salt, especially because it was salted caramel. The fudge was sold by the quarter-pound, which easily fed both of us and let our friends snitch plenty too. Like the banana, the fudge was definitely worth the purchase.
The peanut butter cups were solid, coming in both dark and milk chocolate. Both varieties were good as the peanut butter meshed well with the chocolate, blending into a symphony of flavors. While definitely better than a classic Reese’s cup, they too could have used a touch of salt. Again, the peanut butter cups were no doubt worthwhile to buy.
In total, we spent $17.70 on two bananas, two peanut butter cups, and a quarter pound of fudge. This is a more than fair price for the quantity and quality of the treats that we bought. We will definitely be returning to Munson’s on our next trip to Olde Mistick Village.
