Sweet Lunas, a frozen yogurt shop on Main Street in Old Saybrook, offers a vibrant and personalized dessert experience. Upon entering, customers are greeted by the scent of candy and a friendly staff, creating an immediately welcoming atmosphere. The interior stands out from more traditional frozen yogurt chains, featuring bright colors and a distinctive theme centered around a black Labrador named Luo. A statue of Luo is displayed near the entrance, while photos and videos of the dog—often shown playing on the beach or inside the shop—are visible throughout the space, reinforcing the store’s local and personal feel.
Beyond its atmosphere, Sweet Lunas distinguishes itself through the variety and flexibility of its menu. Customers begin by selecting a cup, with designs that rotate based on seasons and holidays, adding a small but notable detail to the experience. The self-serve frozen yogurt and gelato bar offers a wide range of flavors, from chocolate peanut butter cup to yellow cake batter, and allows customers to control both portion size and flavor combinations.
The topping selection is similarly extensive and organized into multiple stations. The first includes dry toppings such as cereals, gummy candies, and chocolate chips. The second features items like fresh fruit, boba, and cookie dough. A final station offers syrups and whipped cream, allowing customers to customize their dessert further.
With such a large selection of flavors, it was extremely hard to settle on just one, but I decided on a mix of vanilla and cake batter. I was pleased with how creamy and rich the vanilla flavor was, and the cake batter was an amazing complement to it.
I topped my ice cream with salty almonds, gummy worms, boba, strawberries, and whipped cream. The mix of salty and sweet flavors created the perfect combination, and the frozen gummy worms were a nice surprise at the end. The best part was choosing my hot pink spoon to enjoy my ice cream with!
Pricing is determined by weight, meaning costs can vary depending on portion size and toppings. While this model offers flexibility, it can also lead to higher prices if customers are not mindful of portions. Bowls that contain ingredients of higher weight such a fruit, gummy candy, and a lot of ice cream typically cost over $8. However bowls with less ice cream, cereal, and chocolate are closer to $6 or $7.
Overall, Sweet Lunas combines a lively atmosphere with a high level of customization, making it a popular destination for both locals and visitors. Its blend of variety, personalization, and community-oriented branding positions it as a notable small business in the Old Saybrook area.
