Mental Health Fair

There was a very significant day for many students and teachers: the first mental health fair was held in the field house recently. Many associations including LBGT communities, Jordan Chiropractic and Waterford Youth Service Bureau came to give high school students advice on stress and being true to themselves. There were mini games and many pamphlets, business cards and stress relief balls were distributed.

“I believe the drunk driving experiment was amazing,” senior Katie Manley says as she shares her favorite part of the fair. “We had to put on these drunk goggles and sit on this miniature bicycle and maneuver through these cones and everyone kept bumping into them. I believe it was a good experiment.”

Senior Kaylee Thurlow said her experience on the opposite side of the table was enjoyable: “I work for the Waterford Youth Service Bureau so I was handing out flyers for a woman giving financial advice.” However, Kaylee wasn’t the only Thurlow attending the fair. “My mother came in support of Gabrieles Martial Arts,” Nicole Thurlow says. “It seemed as if everyone was crowding around this particular table because of all of the helpful self-defense demonstrations.”

Inside the SOS club, the club that advocated for the fair, Mrs. Collins expressed that she loved the opportunity. She felt as if it was needed and she spoke to multiple people about stress relief, which was an helpful to many students.

Students and teachers alike were given helpful tips about how to relieve stress, work productively and feel safe in their environments.
