Waterford volleyball took second place in the Class M state tournament, losing 3-1 to number one seeded and 2018 state champions Seymour. The match took place at East Haven High School and began at 1PM. on Saturday. The starting lineup was led by senior captains Sabrina Kobyluck, Rachel Miller, and Ryleigh Gonyo, along with Allesondra Folino, Briana Muckle, Kate Lange, and Angela Colonis. Waterford lost the first set 25-22, but went on to win a long and intense second set 36-38, the longest set in CIAC history. However, the Lancers conceded the last two sets 26-24 and 25-20, earning second place.

Despite second not being the result they had wanted, Waterford had a successful season, going 21-6, winning the ECC Division I title, and playing in the state final match. Tri-captain and outside hitter Rachel Miller remarked after the game that “it was really close all the way through. We fought hard til the end, and I’m extremely proud of us.” The Lancers also achieved impressive stats throughout the match. Ryleigh Gonyo had 35 kills and Rachel Miller had an additional 17 kills. Setter Sabrina Kobyluck also had 57 assists. It was the last game for the seven seniors along with beloved freshman and middle school coach Candace Benedict, who retired at the end of the season.
