Fall Sports Sept 24 – Oct. 1, 2013

Cross Country:

Waterford and Killingly met at Bacon Academy to compete in a tri-meet.  In the girls’ race, the team lost to Bacon, but beat Killingly by 35.  Sophomore Jeannette Mooney had the fastest time.

The boys’ team had a similar fate, losing a close one to Bacon but defeating Killingly.  Juniors Dan Clark and Caleb Harris came in second and third respectively.

Girls’ Soccer:

The girls’ soccer team maintained its perfect record with a 4-3 win over Stonington. Senior Melina Spanos scored two goals and added two assists, as senior Genaya Loftis and sophomore Lauren Goldstein added one goal each. The team is now 6-0-1 on the year, including 4-0 in the ECC Medium Division.

The team smoked Killingly 7-0. Loftis, Spanos, and sophomore Jessica Harpell each had two goals, with sophomore Claire Hurley chipping in with the seventh. The Lancers are now 7-0-1 on the year, running their ECC Medium Division record to 5-0.

Junior Lexi Lewis scored the Lancers’ lone goal as they drop their first game of the season 2-1 to East Lyme in the ALS Cup. Freshman Jordan Kovacs recorded eight saves as the team goes to 7-1-1 on the year.

Field Hockey:

Seniors Briana Sotiropoulos, Taylor Pierce and Julia Peay scored one goal each, defeating Woodstock Academy 3-1.

Last Friday, the girls went to Killingly to face the Redgals, where junior Sarah Riemann scored a goal, giving Waterford a 1-0 win over Killingly in the ECC. Senior Alyssa Mathiowetz assisted with the goal and junior Jodi Weiss made three saves. The squad’s overall record is 5-3,  and 5-2 in the conference.

Volleyball:

Senior Alex Moger had 11 kills, and junior Sarah Pacheco added six kills, but the Lancers fell to 2-4 with a 3-1 loss to Woodstock on September 23. Game scores were 21-25, 25-21, 15-25, and 16-25. Senior Amanda Tourjee chipped in with 23 assists.

Moger landed 10 kills and Tourjee had 20 assists as the Lancers swept New London on September 24. The team was then 3-4, including 2-0 in ECC Medium play.

The Lancers swept Plainfield, 3-0, to even its record to 4-4.

Tourjee had 28 assists, and sophomore Jill Sykora added 20 digs in the Lancers’ 3-1 win over Bacon Academy. Games scores were 25-15, 19-25, 25-14, and 25-13. Pacheco added nine kills and five aces, and Moger had nine kills. The team improved to 5-4, including 4-0 in the ECC Medium.

Tourjee’s 30 assists and Moger’s 17 kills were not enough as the Lancers fell to East Lyme 3-1. Game scores were 21-25, 27-25, 20-25, and 18-25. The Lancers now sit at 5-5.

The Lancers made a clean sweep of Montville on Friday, winning 25-8, 25-15, and 25-18. Tourjee had 20 assists, Moger had 12 kills, and Sykora added eight digs as the team rises to 6-5 on the year.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving:

Sophomore Meika Gathy, won three and junior Asia Langely, won two events to help to win the meet against Ledyard (98-72). Gathy won the 500 (5:47.11), 50 backstroke (31.73), and 100 backstroke (1:10.11). Langely won the 50 freestyle (25.68), and 100 butterfly (1:02.57). Freshmen Caitlin Henderson and Tori Zane also won events for Waterford.

Sophomore Meika Gathy won two events to contribute to the win against Windham/Lyman Memorial (86-63). Gathy won the 200 freestyle (2:24.86) and the 50 freestyle (30.60). Also winning for Waterford: junior Asia Langely, sophomore Kelly Cheng, senior Catherine Ward.

The team had some great swims, but fell to the East Lyme Vikings 97-64.  Sophomore, Meika Gathy, won the 400 freestyle by .55 seconds with a time of 5:00.04. Junior Asia Langely won the 50 freestyle with a time of 28.27 and the 100 freestyle (1:07:96). Freshman Caitlin Henderson  won the 100 breaststroke (1:26.80).

Boys’ Soccer:

On the 24th, the Lancers defeated the New London Whalers 3-0.  Yianni Longinitis scored twice with Dan C adding a third goal.

On the 26th, the Lancers beat Plainfield  7-1.  Connor Murphy scored three goals with Dan C, Kevin Zeppieri, Evan B, and Kevin Kim each scoring once.  Austin Schwartz recorded three saves.

The Lancers took on Montville on the 28th, winning by a score of 3-1.  This keeps Waterford undefeated.

On the first day of October, the Lancers faced ECC rival Stonington.  Aaron Schwartz scored twice, while Max Wofley andand Connor Murphy each scored once, helping Waterford to win by a score of 4-0.  Austin Schwartz made two saves in what would be a shutout.

Football:

The Lancers faced Stonington in  its first home game of the season.  The game was close through the first three quarters, tied up at 21 heading into the fourth.

Senior Seth Hoagland led the attack by rushing for two touchdowns with senior Bishme Sheppard making the third. However, Hoagland suffered what is speculated to be an MCL sprain during a late game drive. The injury shifted momentum to Stonington’s favor.

 Freshman Spencer Hoagland, Seth’s younger brother, entered the game, and, though he made an attempt, the team lost by a score of 35-21, after throwing two interceptions.   Waterford will face St. Bernard’s this Friday for their second home game.
